Getting Started with PreTeXt

Section Part 1. Create a GitHub Account

GitHub is the service that will host your project files and your public web page. A personal account is free and more than enough for everything in this guide.
  1. Open github.com in your browser.
  2. Click Sign up in the top right and follow the prompts. Choose a username you can live with (it will appear in the public URL of anything you publish), enter your email, and pick a password.
  3. Check your email and confirm the address. GitHub will not let you use template repositories until you do.
  4. When you land on the GitHub home page logged in, you’re done with Part 1.

✓ You know it worked when….

In the top right corner of github.com, you see a small profile icon with your username’s first letter, not a Sign in button.

If you get stuck: confirmation email didn’t arrive.

Check your spam folder. Some institutional email systems are aggressive about GitHub. If nothing shows up after a few minutes, there’s usually a Resend confirmation link on the GitHub page you land on. Worst case, use a personal email address instead of your institutional one for this signup.
